Olmito Wastewater Treatment Plant

Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin are studying this unique Urban Engineering design to find out how this 750,000 gallon-per-day treatment facility uses nature’s processes to treat wastewater. The plant’s large holding ponds and rock-reed filters take advantage of the inexpensive land by providing large surface areas for evaporation and long detention times. The rock-reed filters use native plants to produce a remarkably clean effluent without the use of chemicals. The Olmito plant, in operation since 1997 north of Brownsville, is an example of Urban Engineering’s ability to develop innovative solutions to solve our clients’ problems.
